cage question for vield chams

TimS Jun 28, 2007 12:39 AM

ok so i have been looking for a new cage for my cham but was wondering if it built one with glass/plexi bottom/sides/back and had screen front and top if that would be enough air flow? i think a custome cage would look better and with misting a all screen cages i dont feel like getting the wall or whatever is behind the screen cage soaked. there is a fan blowing in the room so there is always aor flow in the room since i hae lots of reptiels and like to keep a even temp through out for the most part

What you are describing is a typical european cage. Due to cold drafts, etc., they developed this style of cage and have great success with it.

Keep in mind which type of chameleon you have - montane species require cooler temps and generally higher humidity as well. Lowland species prefer things a bit drier and warmer. Cage temps can be adjusted up much easier than adjusted down.

Good luck!

You sound passionate for your animal as do I. I had my trials and errors building cages, so I would say that if you found the appropiate screen, you should go all screen why?. I have seen the difference, chameleons really do appreciate the flow of air, if you can provide it, they will more likely thrive healthy, as for the walls, misting is appropiate but a drip system is enjoyed best, once a day, you can mist the leaves of live plants if you have any in there like pothos, they also drink out of dishes if it has a leaf in it, the drip system works cuss they see the water and immediately turn to drink from it. make sure you have a dish below to collect the water, too much humidity is bad if you have other substrate below. The walls can always be wiped, but I let you decide, chameleons take a lot of work

thanks for your input i think im gonna end up still building a cage but only have the back and bottom glass or plexi. cause i literaly have a room full of reptiles and dont wanna take chance of getting wires wet that run along the back bottom of walls.
