If you have an Ornate Box Turtle...

RickHouTX Jun 28, 2007 11:26 AM

Would you kindly tell me how many toes it has on its rear feet? I know they generally have 4 but mine has 3 and was thought by a previous owner to be a 3 Toed/Ornate hybrid.

Thanks,

Rick

Hello Rick,

Both my Ornates have four toes on the rear legs. I also have a hybrid-three toed that only has three toes on the rear. Can you post a pic? If there are only three toes on each rear leg then chances are that it is a Three toed or hybrid.

Bosco,

Are you saying it's cross between T. o. ornata and T. c. triunguis? We've talked of hybrids before in this group, but I don't remember anyone talking of hybrids between T. ornata and T. carolina.

Hello Bill,

Without a photo I am guessing it is a cross between a Three toed (Terrapene Carolina Triuguis) and an Ornate, (T. Ornata). Probably a Western or Eastern. Mine is a cross between a Three Toed and a Western.
