"Het Pied Markers" on normal females

JM Jun 28, 2007 12:58 PM

I know there are a few people who have been waiting to see what would come from breeding these two girls~
Both are WC 03 subadult females with what LOOKS like the "het pied markers" so many people talk about
Lips:

and Hydra

which I bred to a 100% het pied male WITHOUT the markers (he is a proven het pied from RDR~ purchased directly from RDR so I am sure of his genetics)

I knew there was not really any chance the females were hets......but we all like to dream a little~ and with everything you hear about the "het pied markers" I just had to pair these girls up to a known het pied to see. Between the two girls I got 13 babies~ three are males and ten are females. Great ratios! But no pieds. Oh well~ I didn't actually expect any......but I was hoping to be the next lucky SOB everyone hated! LOL! Oh well~ at least I've got plenty of 50% het girls to work with later! Got another female from a different clutch this morning so now I have 11 poss het girls and more clutches to hatch! (this mornings clutch ratio was not as good though~ 4.1) I'll get a pied some day~ probably from these girls before my 100% het girl ever goes ahead and gets to work for me!

Cheryl - congratulations on the babies - we did the same thing this year - got a clutch of 8 normals - five of them have the "het pied marker" - but considering the circumstances - I'm not entirely sure that they will be our holdbacks - LOL. Just curious - how many (if any) of yours ended up with the marker belly?

Congrats again!

I just checked. All 13 have the striping to some extent~ but only 2 of the females and 1 of the males have the three belly scales clean between the stripes.

Considering their normal mothers had the markers and thier het father did not~ I don't see that the belly striping is going to be any help at all though. I think we will see that more and more too as people like you and me try this expieriment. I'm actually planning on keeping all the girls (well~ I did offer 5 of the girls as an incentive to get some people to help sell my house.......but thats a long shot and I'm pretty sure I'll be keeping them and my house too) and I'm also keeping the girls from the other clutches yet to hatch.

I will get pieds SOMEDAY!

Cool little experiment. Congrats on the babies! I'll be with you one of these days as well as far as pieds go. I'll be hatching out some 50% pieds early next week. My 100% male does have the "marker" as well. Hopefully I get plenty of females to breed back to daddy! That just sounds soooo wrong!

Cheryl,

I was really pulling for you guys to breed Piebalds from this, wild caught female w/clear markers to 100% het pied male...

You did great work on this and you shed some very clear light on this (pied marker) matter.

I hope you guys are going to be breeding again next year...

I have taken the long road with many of my projects, and I have been let down also...

Find a new project and keep trying - you never know what the future may hold?

Alan
