HELP! im new

m8r8j Jun 28, 2007 03:43 PM

hey im new to this whole lizard thing... i had a few questions. one... i used vita sand for my leopard gecko, hes about 1 year old and about 7 inches long. i bought him like this, is vita sand ok to use? two... he wont really eat mealworms out of the bowl, i put 10 in it with calcium powder on them and over 3 days two of them dissappeared... and another question, my most important, i bought 25 adult crickets today, and i put 5 in the tank. the gecko goes after them but he tries to bite them about 3 inches too far away. its like hes nearsighted or something... could he be blind? the crickets literally need to be like 2 inches in front of his face for him to see them, and even still he will miss when he lunges... then if the crickets go still then he wont be able to see them anymore and he walks away. please help.

Most people will say that under no circumstances should you use sand of any kind. However an adult leo won't have the same problems as a younger one will, but, an adult can get impacted over time by having sand build up by eating a little sand accidently while hunting. They generally will only eat something that moves, and I would assume that they probably see better if it's a little darker. It also may just need to practice it's hunting skills. You might want to try hand feeding the meal worms, use tweezers to hold them in front of it's face. It might also just not be too hungry, to not eat many mealworms. I watch when I put worms in, they can crawl out of the dish I have, so I try and let my leo know that somethings there.

yea i maybe figured that he wasnt hungry and thats why he wasnt eating mealworms... then he ate 5 adult crickets! i had to steer the crickets in front of his face so he owuld eat them. is that normal?

Mine doesn't always go for crickets, and only sees them when they are moving and are about 3-6 inches from her. I assume it's normal.

Mine is usually pretty aggressive with the crickets - once I turn out the light. They definitely hunt better in low-light conditions.

You come to us for advise about a new gecko that you know nothing about... you must have really hated that gecko to have the heart to kill it instead of just selling it to sombody who cares... Your loss, hope you never get anything else. That is messed up.
