I would save that most species of plants that are native in the box turtle's range would be safe to use in an enclosure. So, good plants for Eastern box turtles would be plants that are native, say, east of the Mississippi, plants that are good for Ornate box turtles would be those that are native within that range, etc., etc.

Contact your local Extension Service for help with native plants.

Hosta, mondo grass, lirope, rose of Sharon hibiscus,Malabar, portaluca, acuba, geranium, beauty bush, nasturtiums, abelia, davidii, blue berries, strawberries,

My thinking is if it is native to your area it is most likely OK. I don't put in cultivars or plants which come from other countries.
http://www.chelonia.org/articles/plantsthatpoison.htm are bad plants, but on that list is cherry laurel which we have a 20' tree in the back yard and five eastern live under it in a log pile. Birds eat the berries, chipmunks and squirrels eat the berries. Even though laurel will make people sick and I have never seen a turtle eat a berry and they have lived there for years.
Native is the best way to go, just don't use them as a food source.

Also make sure they are plants native to the turtles habitat not just your area if its not from the area.

They are smart they have been here 250 million years and hopeful will out live man.

Just my opinion

I have a small pool in my boxies' enclosure. So there is a fern by it that is very sturdy and doing well- they trample over everything!! Also I've put in some medium-sized grasses that get to two or three feet tall. They spend a lot of time at the bases of those. The grasses also stand up well to the turts.
