You can "pop" very young snakes but the only 100% accurate way is to probe them. Even probing can throw you off sometimes. You sometimes get the snakes that are like 3 1/2-4 1/2 subcaudal scales deep and basically all you can do is scratch your head and tell them "I'm not sure..."
