Chris,

We have resorted to DNA testing. Labs for zoos do it all the time, and it is foolproof.

where do ya have that done? How much that going to set me back

There are some differences in the sexes but are not easily spotted. Males have slightly larger heads with a slightly different shape, tail bases are thicker...and a few other subtle distinguishing characteristics. I believe these are detailed at the
www.bluetongueskinks.net website.

DNA testing as another poster suggested is the most accurate way to do it. I certainly be interested in the cost, though I could just call my reptile vet and ask him. Being in Canada, the cost is most likely higher if even available up here.

DNA testing can be a bit expensive I believe, but is usually 100% accurate.

Sexing by physical features is highly misleading! While most males have a broder head, or most females have a wider belly, not all do. Males will usually have a squishy tail base compared to the famale, though.

Occasionally, often when they're younger, the hemipenis will pop out during a bowel movement. In these instances, you may also spot 'sperm plugs'. Another way is if you have what you thing is a male and female together. The male will start to whip his tail as a coutship.

I wouldn't be going on the tail whipping that's for sure!

Females also whip their tails to attract the male. If anything, it's more likey that you have a female if the tail is moving about - but as I said - I wouldn't use this method at all.

just wait til they have a poo and watch. Sounds yukky but at least you'll know! Oh, and just cuz the hemipenes may not pop out during one poo doesn't mean they won't come out during another - so watch a few to be sure!
