Kahl Stripeline question?

skyslinger Jun 29, 2007 08:20 AM

Anyone else notice some keep color some don't? I bought a pair back in 03 and one has kept great color the other has almost none. I wonder if this will effect the offspring? I purchased them from Pete so I know they are in fact his Stripeline. Just wondering? Any thoughts or observations on this?

You are right Ty!!

It seems that people did not give much thought to the outcome of their breedings...it is best to hold back all the most amazing looking animals to breed them....so that they can produce the desired results.

I know what I look for in a particular animal...and I try to excentuate that trait or color from a breeding...then I try to pick the best from that breeding to breed later.

The end results will be animals that may just amaze me...maybe some others but I will then be happy to keep them all...lol...

Its really just Polygenetics...

it seems that some people are happy to just produce what they can rather than, the best that they can. Just my 2 pennies.

Some of it comes down to economics, some to luck of the draw on baby acquisition.

Many can't (or won't) afford the top babies with the top price tags. And of course the stunners get swooped up quickly. Both by the actual breeder (holdbacks) and those that find out about them early and act quickly. The cream of the litters always rises to the top and is removed quickly leaving the rest. Those also get sold off and still have the potential to create babies.

IMO any litter of babies will get a smattering of other genes from both parents and will have a range of colors more or less centered around the colors of the parents. And I don't mean just one specific color or trait. Like previously said polygenetics. Besides the single morph gene (or two if you consider stripe) of a Kahl albino, there are many more (thousands?) of other genes that come into play. So, if you take babies with the traits you want More red for example and breed them together, their babies will also tend to have colors plus and minus of their parents. BUT, those parents had more red so the average baby will have more red and the top end will be higher than the top end of the litter(s) the parents came from.

And so on and so on.

my real point was how some hold their color more than others. Both of these were extremely colorful as neonates. My suprise is how much of a difference there is now after 4 years. The male has held his color much more than the female has. You often see the "Kahl stripe line" referenced as an indicator of color and its retention. In the end, the offspring produced from these animals will be dependent on a combination of the two animals that are bred together. And of course, I will keep the very best for future projects. I like many of you do this for my own enjoyment and am only selling my surplus generating money for future projects. My mortgage is definitely not dependent on my boa sales or I would be homeless. LOL

homeless, I'd also have the loan sharks looking for me!!!!

I see that as well, some babies will look stunning as babies then color down as they grow up. Others are plainish when born and just gain color with each and every shed. The hardest part is guessing which will be the best as adults without keeping them all!! Prime example is coral albinos, from what I understand, many don't have the coral look as babies and it develops as they age.

I agree with both Andy and Dave.

I am my first customer.

It's all about quality with me from the best looking pastels I can produce to the highest end project I can afford to invest in.

I plan on breeding snakes for as long as I live and lucky for me my mortgage payment does not depend on the sale of any of my snakes, therefore I can be patient.

Patience allows me the ability to produce snakes that make me go WOW!!!

Like I said I'm my first customer, but I can only keep so many of my own snakes back. The hope is that what I am not willing to keep is still at a quality level that you my customer will be please with.
