CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Residents at an assisted living center in East Charlotte were surprised by an unexpected visitor.
Wednesday, animal control officers caught a 2-foot long baby alligator near the Willow Ridge Senior Center on Milton Road. They first got calls about the gator earlier this month.
Benny White and Robert Pickett were walking to the store, Wednesday, when the gator surprised them.
White said, "I thought it was a possum. He told me what it was."
Pickett added, "Yeah, he was about two feet long. When we saw it, it scared me at first because I said, 'Man that's an alligator.'"
Animal control officers believe someone was raising the gator as a pet when it somehow escaped. The gator will be turned over to the North Carolina Wildlife, which will decide what happens to it.
