Dear Diary

Herpo Jun 29, 2007 09:50 AM

Last night I had to turn on the heat in the boid and colubrid rooms. High yesterday was around 76. The temps last night were in the mid-60's. Today it might get into the upper 70's. I've run the a/c only 4 times this year, maybe 10 hours total. This is N. central Texas but still, maybe 15-20 degrees below normal. There has been only one day when it hit 90. at 9:45AM it is still only 66F.
Del Rio and Sanderson are forecast for mid-80's today - 10-12 degrees below normal. It is currently raining over most of VV county.
35 years in W. TX and I can't remember it staying this cool this long, this far into the year. It has also been one of the wettest springs I can remember.
While a few herpers have had success this year overall the amount of alterna found (as well as other species) has been rather low. 20-30 alterna in June is NOT a large number.
I get the feeling that July and possibly even August might be more productive this year. There is hope.

John, I don't give a rats ass how old and experienced you are,............June has been THE MOST OUTSTANDING year I can remember for alterna. You have to remember back in 1902 (back when you first started herping) that not a whole lot of people were herping! You and Chamberlain, and hepring wasn't really mainstream!! I think from what we DO KNOW FOR SURE as far as numbers, June was excellent!!! COME ON!!!! You are a jaded and cynical old man!!!! Put gas in you rlittle car (or truck) and experience life again!!!
