40 gallon breeder

rdude110 Jun 29, 2007 12:06 PM

well it turns out im getting a JCP but as for the 40 gallon breeder i have lying in my basement im either going to use it for some crested geckos, an alligarot lizard pair or... Is it big enough for a BRB and it has a special slidy lid thingy, so would i need to put a towel over it.

Will need more than a towel, keeping humidity in a screen topped aquarium is difficult at best. Not a fishy person, how big is a 40 gallon? Floor size?

36x18, decent size i think, and i hate fish to and this one was made for reptiles (lcok slide lid)

TimS Jun 29, 2007 01:28 PM

since it is a sliding top cage 40 breeder and dave the cage size is 3X18X18 but back to the cage turn it on its back so the screen is in front and slides up or if it is on a shelf slide it down the if you want just set a strip light on top of glass for lighting and stick a heat pad underneath for heat holds in heat and humidity alot better than having a light opn top and trying to cover it with a towel

I have both my rainbows in tanks with screen tops, i take a ziplock bag (the gallon ones) and i cut it in half then take it to the top of the screen, the plasic keeps humidity in quite well, i do poke a couple holes in it though (they DO have to breathe!)

what I do for my screen tops with my BRB's is very cheep and effective.

Just pick up some of the thinnest countertop/cabinet surface wood (super thin fiber board with a smooth laminate on one side) which I think is 1/8 or 1/16 inch thick.

Then cut it to the size of the interior edge of the upper tank frame. This allows it to sit on top of the frame for the screen but be held in place on all sides by the tanks top frame. Make sure you have it laminate side down though.

In addition to eliminating almost all airflow it also, if you have cats, prevents them from popping out the screen if they get into the snake room.

You can also control ventilation by cutting a small hole in one if you need more ventilation after the lids are in use.

When I did this for my 60 gallons for my BRB's it only ran like $3 per lid.

Of coarse this does require you to have access to a table saw or other adequate cutting device for cutting thin fiberboard.

Hope this was helpfull,

Sean.

that wont work for the type of cage he has since it is a sliding lid there is no lip to set the cut top onto

sean1976 Jun 30, 2007 02:11 AM

What do you mean by "sliding lid"?

My 60 gallons and 40 gallon breeder all have slide in reptile screen lids and what I described works great for them. In your slide in reptile lid there is a portion of the aluminum frame that holds the screen which is still exposed when the lid is all the way in. That is the edge the board sits on and the frame holds it from sliding off that.

If the sliding lid is something other then the standard reptile lid then I misinterpreted what he meant and am not sure what type of lid it is.

ok yea htehy are the same what you said in the other post sounded to me like what i did when i had fish tanks for the snakes i took a piecs of 1/4 inch plexi cut it to the siz eof the lil lip surrounding the inside of the tank and set the plexi ontp of that with small holes for air of a square for a heat light pending on type of snake in it. then put screen ontop of that. maybe i just read something wrong or got confused or just to much energy drink

rainbowsrus Jun 30, 2007 02:34 PM

ya gotta lay off them energy drinks....frying yer brain>

lol now I know what you were thinking. I never did that with my fish tanks but have kept tons of fish and know what you were picturing.

What I was describing actually works the same way but I was describing how I did it with reptile slide lid and upper frame.

Only difference is that instead of resting it on that inside lip of the upper frame in a fish tank you instead rest it on the aluminum frame of the slide in part of the reptile lid.

Hope that paints a clearer picture for you

Sean.
