black hognose

I was just wondering, how common are black hognose snakes? I just found two that are pure black, not far from where I live in Va.
Sorry, no pictures, I don't have a camera. I just wanted to know how common black ones are.

oh, one more thing, they seem pretty fat. How do I tell if they are gravid?
