baby ribbon or garter snakes

DragonEmpress Aug 17, 2003 11:23 PM

Heys!!
i' have been thinking of gettin a ribbon snake for awhile now. I got two of those large critter keeper things and have a kewl shelf to put them on, one of them has my betta and two AD frogs in it, and i was wondering if the other would be big enough for a snake? If not thats ok, i have a empty 10 gal and an 55 gal that i could use.
I was thinking of just catching a garter snake, but if i do that i would want to try to catch a young one. Last summer i only saw one baby one and it was near the end of the summer. Where and what time of the year should i look for the younger snakes? i would prefer to buy a captive breed baby tho, but none of the pet stores around here have garters. Does anyone know of a place where i could get one. i would just feel a little bad if i had to have it shipped here, how do they ship live animals?? Anyways, i won't keep blabbing. Thanks for reading this n' stuff!!

What part of the country do you live in? If you happen to live in the North East (Massachusetts) I'd be glad to give you one (or more) of the babies my garters have had this year. I have many of them. They are regular eastern garters (T. sirtalis sirtalis). If you want something a bit more exotic, check out Scott Felzer's site (there should be a link at the top of the garter forum). He has many varieties and morphs of garters. Good luck, Scott.

Usually if I were to ask where someone lived they would say half way across the world, LOL. I live in Salem (about 20 minutes north of Boston.) If you would like any CB babies, just say the word. I have plenty for you to choose from. I'll try to post a pic of some of them tomorrow. They are currently eating pieces of worms but can easily be switched over to mice (if that's what you prefer.) I feed them every other day right now but if you switched them over to mice they would only have to be fed once every 5 to 7 days (once they are older). Just let me know what you would like to do, Scott.

P.S. If you want to e-mail me directly my e-mail address is snakinaroundtown@yahoo.com.

I live kinda near the Rhode Island border...about maybe 45 minutes to get to Boston (i think, haven't been there for awhile) assuming i don't get lost for 4 hours, lol. I would love a garter baby, and that'd be great if you posted some pics, as long as its not a problem, thanks the only problem i might have is that intill at least March imma still be living with my parents, and my moms afraid of snakes, lol. so i dunno, i was gunna just get one and not tell them, i pay for everything my pets need of course and they hardly even notice i have them (unless my 3 foot iguana happens to wander into the living room ) Anyways, i really hope that wont be too much of a problem. i have my iggy and two turtles but i've really wanted a snake for a while now, and garters seemed perfect since they don't get too big, and i just think they're awesome animals Thanks for replying to my posts and everything, and i hope i'm not being to much trouble!

Hello, I finally got a chance to take a pic of some of my babies. It's not the best pic but you'll get an idea what they look like. If you look closely, you'll see a quarter underneath them so you can get an idea how small they are. BTW, your not being a problem at all. I'd be glad to give you one. Plus you would be better off getting a baby that's definately feeding than going out and catching one (although they usually will feed if you were to get a w/c one. Maybe you can show your mother how small and cute they are and she won't mind as much. Well, check out the pic and let me know when you would like to pick one (or more) up. I have plenty of them. Take care, Scott.
