odd question

herpermike1 Jun 30, 2007 07:53 AM

i caught 2 gravid melanistic easterns. they've both laid already. i just wondered if anyone knew off hand how that works in hogs? will they be hets? maybe look normal and darken with age? just curious. guess i'll know soon anyway but wanted a little input. oh, there are a lot of mel. where these came from by the way, so the fathers could be also. kinda cool to mess with. Thanx mike

sorry, got 45 eggs between the two. 40 look good. also what about trying to scent a pinky for the first meal? any thoughts on that?

Not much is know about the genetics of eastern hoggies. The babieas will probably hatch out looking normal, and just darken as they age.

i thought that it may be that way but wasn't sure. i'm excited to find out. having two clutches from black females may be interesting too. thank you.

Let me know if you want to get a home for one or more of those babies....

Jenea is right-they will start out with pattern, but the melanistics will darken with each shed. I assume melanism is a simple recessive in easterns, but I don't KNOW that. A good experiment to try with the offspring, no?

And yes, if it were me I'd attempt toad-scented pinks from the start.
