Breeding success with 18 month old males

HeathN Jun 30, 2007 08:45 AM

I have a couple of first timers for this coming breeding season. One will be 18-20 months old and the other will be 22-24 months. What kind of breeding success have some of you had with males this age? Any increase in slugs? Is there a maximum size female that can be used with males this age? Is there a possibility of multiple females, back to back with a couple weeks break?

I am trying to line up my breeding pairs for this coming season and could really use some input from more experienced breeders. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

i have had success with males younger than 18 months. Last year I had him with a rather large argentine females that gave me 33 live babies, 6 slugs, and 1 premie. so it can be done, I guess it just depends on the individual. If I was you, I would not push him too hard to do multiple females. In my opinion, its too much stress on a young male. I would try 1, if he's successful, be happy with that and give him the rest of the season off. just my opinion.

I had an anery at 19 months that was plenty willing, and courted right away, while My hypo of the same age merely hid the whole time and wanted nothing to do with her.

It's definitely not unheard of.
