aluminum foil question

LizardSmoke Jun 30, 2007 11:23 AM

Hi everyone, I have one of those exo-terra porcilin wire clamp lamps with a 100w powersun in it. It is extremly bright now that it's in my living room when i watch tv. So I was wondering if I could wrap a bit of aluminum foil around only have of the wire dome frame to block the light. Plus it would make have of a reflector too. Would this be ok? Remeber it would only be on half of the light fixture wire frame, the other half would be open for ciculation. Everyone I asked where I live thinks it would be fine, they all say that you cook with it so it handles that heat. Just want some thoughts tho.

I think it would be fine. I use a brooder lamp with mine with no problem and Zoo Med now sells a solid dome for these lamps so the heat can't be that big an issue.

yeah, I think i'll give it a try, so you don't think it poses a fire hazard of any kind?

I don't see any issue with using aluminum foil to block the light from the MVB. I would make sure it doesn't come in direct contact with the bulb though, just in case.

Foil doesn't 'burn' very easily so I don't see it being a fire hazard. If the foil touches something flammable, it will be though. Also note it can get hot to the touch and may blacken eventually so make sure nothing living gets in contact with the foil once the light has been on.

ya it works great, no big bright bulb burning my retnias, haha. I was thinking about it getting black, but if or when it does i'll replace it. Oh ya it won't come in contact with anything, it's clamped to a big wooden L shaped bracket that's screwed to my cage stand on the outside. i'll have to post a pic of my whole setup he sometime this week.

Actually, you'd have a really hard time setting anything on fire with foil unless you wadded it up into a ball first. It's so thin it can't hold much heat at all. You can pick aluminum foil up with your hands, directly out of the oven, as long as you're only touching loose edges that are not in direct contact with hot food or pans or something.
