How much does you 6 1/2 ft boa weigh?

laurarfl Jul 01, 2007 09:28 AM

Trying to get an idea on weight. When I first got mine, he was about 5 1/2 ft, 12 pounds, dehydrated and 3yo. He's grown about another ft in 6 months, put on 2-3 more pounds, but still looks skinny to me. He's thick and heavy-bodied, but has a lot of loose skin around his neck. You can pinch and hold about 1/4-1/2 inch. I don't want to overfeed, but I do want him to be at a healthy weight. I saw an ad last week and someone said they had a boa that was 7ft and 45 pounds. I thought, "NO way!" But I do want to get idea of a proper weight from experienced keepers. I have an obese corn that went on 'snakewatchers', so I have a tendency to feed conservatively now. I feed every week, but smaller portions. This boa is eating jumbo rats every 7-10 days with no problem.

Males are generally leaner than females so while a 7-ft female could easily be 40 lbs, a male of the same length shouldn't be that heavy. A snake that has been starved will have lots of loose skin indicating that it's body is supposed to be much larger not only in girth, but probably in length too. If you are feeding jumbo rats every 7-10 days the snake will fill out very quickly and probably go through a growth spurt too. Once the snake has a healthy weight though, you may want to slow the meals down to once every two weeks.

Good luck,

This BCi female is 20 lbs, right at 7 ft. But she's always been slightly thick.

The 2x4 she's on in the second pic is 6 ft.

This one is 8ft and 22 lbs in this pic. Probably a closer "average" weight length ratio.

Hope that helps.

My Flicka is 74" and weighs 19lbs at 3 years old. The stubborn bugger don't want to breed either, if she don't take this time she is out of the game totally.

I probably should have included a pic, but I don't know if it will help to determine if he's a little underweight.
