UV bulb question ...

toshamc Jul 01, 2007 02:38 PM

I have my GTP in a 2 foot cube cage with a semi-natural set up (Jim Scharphorn made cage). I understand that the UV bulbs aren't necessary for GTPs - but I was wondering if I could use one for the plants inside the cage as the cage gets no light aside from what comes from the bulb so I have to take the the plants out to sit in the sun. Are there any pros or cons to using an UV bulb for GTPs? Big no no or it could work?

Thanks all!!!

I'm planning on going with a low level UV full spectrum light in my cages. Although chondros are nocturnal, I believe in the wild they do get some UV exposure and I'm beginning to think that it would have some beneficial results for them. I will be placing them on a timer and we'll see what will happen. I don't know of any problems except some people have said that snakes can get cataracts from the UV. I'm not certain of that happening though as most of the snakes that had them were older and many were amelanistic. Diurnal snakes in the wild are exposed to more UV than they would get from a low level UV light especially if you have lots of plants.

I have used lights in my cages for many years mostly to light my pothos. But it may also aid in cycling by manipulating the photo periods. I just use a good plant grow florescent bulb.

I have alway's used the 2.0 % uv bulb's, even with hatchling's. I believe that it actually help's with the colour change to develope sooner and bring's out even better result's in the adult's as well. I have seen dull/drab adult's turn into some amazing colour's once placed under a lower percentage uv buld after a couple of month's.
