Hello,
I am a preschool teacher in MA on Martha's Vineyard. In early spring parents of one of my students brought us some tadpoles that had hatched from eggs that they took from a pond somewhere on Cape Cod...at a relatives house I think. We quickly created a habitat for them and out of about 100 tadpoles almost all survived to sprout legs. The children really enjoyed watching this process and we had hoped to let them go in a nearby pond but found out through the local Audobon that they are not native to the island of Martha's Vineyard. About a month and a half ago the parents who brought them to us took them back to the pond they were harvested from. We had wanted to keep one but were not sure what they were or how to care for them. I had quickly vaced and cleaned the frog habitat(a 30 x 24 herp habitat with a screen top) when our froglets left us.....Well imagine my surprise when today I was doing a more thorough cleaning and found one little froglet still in the tank! Now finally to my questions....I have no way of bringing him to the cape anytime soon and understand that he should be brought to the pond where he was taken from anyway...also impossible for various reasons...so, What kind of frog is he? Can we Keep him...if not permenantly at least til fall? What kind of care is required?
I am inclined to believe that he is a wood frog. He fits the description but as they hibernate I'm at a loss of how to even attempt to keep him if we even should. attached some photos. Hard to see him too clearly he is the size of a thumbnail and has a white belly and a white line along upper lip that runs to shoulder. Any info you can give is greatly appreciated!
