My new gecko's having some problems! (Sorry, this is long!)

cheshireycat Aug 18, 2003 01:01 AM

At the Daytona show the other day I purchased a female Bell albino from Reptile Industries. She was with two or three other female Bell's her age and she was the most active one, and the one with the pattern I liked best. She's pretty young, but I can't tell you exactly (I'll try to post a photo tomorrow).

Anyway, she was kind of skinny and didn't fare the four 1/2 hour trip home too well. She's very calm, but seems pretty weak. Yesterday she was doing pretty bad!

When she'd walk around, she would only walk very slowly. She made a strong effort to do so and her front legs would shake when she'd move with them. She also looks kind of skinny. None of her bones protrude or anything, but her tail isn't very wide and her body is pretty skinny, especially compared to my other gecko, who seems to be in tip-top shape (I got the other in late May at the F.I.R.E. show in Orlando) and very strong.

Also, this gecko didn't want to eat, which I understood from the stress, but she doesn't seem so stressed today and is acting better, and I think she ate a single small cricket just a few minutes ago. So I'm worried about her. I'm going to get a fecal done on her, but I'm thinking this is something else for some reason...

Anyway, I read something about a common problem with breeders is that the animals can lack iodine. I find this more likely than her lacking calcium, so I gave her a tiny bit of Jump Start yesterday, and I've been feeding the crix I give all my pets very nutritious food and fish flakes and hope this will help. But can anyone tell what is wrong from what I'm describing? She's much better today than yesterday, but I think this is more than stress and am worried for her.

On top of all that, I have another problem with her. It looks as if she's recently shed and one of her front toes is partially being lost (the tip, a little past the claw). It's still there, but looks somewhat dried off. I put her in a shallow dish of warm water and the toe looks better, but it still doesn't look so great. A tiny bit of shedding skin came off, and it looks like the skin left is beyond dead, but there still may be living, unsoffucated tissue inside. From anyone's experience, do you guys think the tip of the toe will make it? Or is this a lost cause in trying to save it?

Anyway, thanks for your help and I'll post some pictures A.S.A.P. She truly is a darling, and I hope she gets better fast!

There is this GREAT product from Flukers, that I BELIEVE is called Repti-Aid. It brought my Whites tree frog back from the dead and put some weight on a baby leo. It adds calories and electrolites and is an appetite stimulant. I have never experienced the leg shaking or anything like that, but the slow walking doesn't sound that bad, unless she's dragging herself or is obviously in pain or laboring to move. I THINK I heard that toes grow back. BUT maybe that was just the nail. I would try to see if you can get the dead skin off that toe and see what is under neath. Other than that, I'm not sure what to tell you. How long ago was it, and is it improving? You should probably take her to a vet! Well, good luck and keep us updated!

Thanks for the quick reply

Anyway, I'm going to leave the toe until the dead skin starts coming off the way I'd leave a sunburn alone until it starts peeling, just incase. I'll look into Repti-Aid surely, though, the Jump Start is probably the same or similar. She only had a lick of that and a lick of some honey, though. I figured she needed some energy.

Oh, and I also put in Nordon's NovAqua that has electrolytes in her water yesterday, just incase getting a little sugar in her wasn't enough. I really should go out and by some pedialyte!

I'll try my best to get those photos uploaded, with close-ups of the toe. I don't think I need her to go to the vet for that, though, but I need to make sure to get a fecal done soon. If there are problems, I'll take her for sure, but I need to get about 15 fecals done, so I can't afford to take her in for something like this (just make sure that she has no parasites or infections!).

Well, thanks again for your help and I'll keep you updated!

Ok well I bought a female jungle albino in june from a major breeder and well after we got her home she wouldnt eat and she shook her legs and feet as she walked around not matter what time it was or anything. I talked to the breeder called him and all and I got really nothing back from him but crap back. I talked to many people about it and other great breeders. I ended up getting an appetiate stimulant (not jumpstart I hear that really doesnt work), and some liquid calcium (you can get non-perscription forum)at AAA reptile supply. Pretty cheap too. I have been giving her this for about 2-3 weeks now and everything it going great she doesnt really shake besides what is normal and is eating, not on her own completly yet but she is working on that but eating out of my hand is a start. Get a fecal down and ask for an appetiate stimulant thae the vet should be able to get for you and get som eliquid calcium, that should work if nothing else is wrong with it (bacteria, protoza). It takes time and patients but it can be done. Hope that helps.

Thanks, it does help a lot

Anyway, I checked again last night and she's still shaking when she walks, but thankfuly it's a lot less, and not with every step anymore.

She was also a lot more active last night, although I found the cricket I thought she ate earlier, so she hasn't eaten (although I thought she ate since she had her head in the cricket bowl for a good while).

Anyway, she does seem stronger now. I'm trying to be careful of calcium, though, because what if this is too much D3 or something? I wouldn't know.

I won't ditch the Jump Start because even if it doesn't do what it's intended, it's still shock full of vitamins, but I'll probably get another product as an apetite stimulant. After seeing her yesterday, though, I'm sure she'll come around with the feedings. Thanks!

I also believe in Repti-Aid. I have used it on water dragons and it is incredible the difference in only a few minutes. We even recommended it to Petsmart when they were having issues with their mountain dragons. They were surprised (which is why I love them so (not))that it worked.
Measure carefully, don't make too much in advance - it will go bad - and good luck.

Ok, I'll make sure to get some then. This does seem like something nutritional she has, thanks

Anyway, does this look like it will fall off, or like there is a good chance some dead skin will come off but there is live flesh inside?

Also, if it does fall off, since it's only the tip, what are the chances that it regrows even as scar tissue?
