Custom Cages, plexiglass vs glass

GizMoe1 Aug 18, 2003 01:09 AM

hey everyone,

Well I have finally decided that mo needs a bigger home, he is a year old now and he has outgrown his 40 gallon tank. I am planning on making a tank that is 4' long, 2' wide and 18" high. I am now debating if I should use glass or some type of plexiglass for the cage. Does anyone here use plexiglass? What are the advantages/disadvantages of plexiglass over regular glass.

I went with glass for the front of my cage. I would guess that the dragons can scratch the plexiglass though. I am sure the glass would be cheaper also. I paid $64 for my glass and that came with the track
Good luck...

"What are the advantages/disadvantages of plexiglass over regular glass."

1/4" plate glass is 1/2 the price of Plexi, but it is twice as heavy. Thats about the only thing I found when I first built mine. I built mine out of 1/4" plate glass since I wouldn't be moving the cages around all the time.

Where do you live? Are you going to sell your 40 gallon? We have a baby beardie and have been looking for a used 40 gallon breeder tank.

Actually, I am going to be using the 40 gallon for my new ornate uro that I just purchased. But, somtimes you can find good deals on tanks at yard sales or thrift stores. Good luck in your search.

I chose to buy glass cages.Twin oaks has some of the best around for the money.I use the 65 gal long terrariums for my dragons. Most of their terrariums are close to a dollar a gallon.Check their show schedule to see if they will be near you anytime soon.Their prices are just to good for me to want to build my own.

Wow, thoes are some of the best prices I have seen! I can see why you don't make your own cage, you cant beat thoes prices. Unfortunatly, I live in California and shipping would be difficult/expensive. Thanks again

Those were really great prices. A 40 gallon breeder acrylic for $70.00....I am waiting to find out how much shipping would be to Illinois. Thanks for the tip.
