Getting my boxie to eat his Veggies....

turtlegirl922 Jul 02, 2007 06:44 PM

I've had my boxie Freddie for about a month now and I can't get him to eat any fruits or veggies. He'll eat all kinds of worms, but that is really about it. I've tried cod liver oil and tuna water on the veggies, but still nothing.

Any other suggestions of things that may work to get him eating?

It would help to know your feeding frequency. If a turtle is overfed they will become picky eaters. In the wild they cannot find insects every time they forage and therefore happily eat all kinds of vegetation from mushrooms, forbs, grasses, berries and fallen fruits. Read the diet chapter of my online book at www.boxturtlesite.info/diet.html to see how to recondition a picky eater to accept more types of food. Good luck!

Whenever I have had this problem, I will give them some items I know they can't resist like bananas, box turtle food and soaked cat kibbles. This food intake will get the feeding response going, and then you can gradually replace items like that with the fruits and veggies you want him to feed on regularly in later feedings.

This always worked for me:

Either buy some beef baby food and mix in veggies. Slowly phase out the baby food. Or buy veggie baby food and mix in their favorite food like worms. Slowly replace the worms with some leafy veggie.
