Urgent Care Needed/Advanced Shell Rot

colorfulcritters Jul 02, 2007 10:25 PM

Found a turtle by the river bank, black shell, long, thin golden stripes, yellow plastron. Well, IT HAS SERIOUS SHELL ROT, WITH ITS SCUTES PEELING OFF, WHITE BONE SHOWING; ITS SKIN IS COMING OFF ITS LIMBS, AND SOME OF ITS SHELL IS CRUMBLING. IT SMELLS HORRIBLY RANCID TOO!

I'd say it's in the advanced stages of shell rot. But my quandary is, I'M WORKING IN TAIWAN AND CANT' FIND A VET, AT THE MOMENT, THAT CARES FOR HERPS. I need to know, therefore, what kind of medicine to get and how to help it recover.

Right now I've been putting iodine in it, have left if out for hours at a time to dry. And today, I bought some bolic acid solution to put in its water. Will these help?

If not, tell me what medicine and methods I can use to help care for advanced shell rot.

HELLO
betadine is what i use and dry docking them on clean paper towels
iodine is the original form of betadine so you are on the right track all ready
clean water helps with the skin
it sounds very advanced if bone is showing but some species are very tough
srub the bad stuff out, peel the flaking scutes and dip him in the solution mixed with water
or scrub with clean sponge
not his head
good luck
jeff
