Parthenogenesis info?

sharilynn72 Jul 03, 2007 01:43 PM

I was wondering if anyone had any info on parthenogenesis in ball python's?? I've been searching on the net & found nada. I plan on contacting someone at WVU on the subject. I am still shocked & went all out to make "Mila" as comfortable as she can be while incubating her clutch..her temps & humidity are at optimum levels & she seems pretty happy. I will post pics as soon as I get a new usb cable for my camera.

Thanks!

For BPs, most of the info will be anecdotal. I have heard of two presumably reliable cases, from this forum in the past. There are well documented cases in rattle snakes, as well as several other vertebrates (two cases in sharks this year in captive steetings in the US). If you want some further advice as to how to take this to the University folks, shoot me an e-mail. Good luck!

Hi JP,
I sent an e-mail to someone at WVU's biology dept.

The only documented case I ever heard of of parthenogensis in boid snakes was for Burmese pythons. That was only documented about 5 years ago at the Artis zoo in Amsterdam. http://www.nature.com/hdy/journal/v90/n2/full/6800210a.html

fertile eggs produced without any male participation...basically what it means.

I have heard this happen in various different reptiles, but not in ball pythons, at least not that I can remember.

Well, it happened with mine.....I can't believe it!
I'm so excited & want all of the info I can get. I wrote to someone from WVU's biology dept. and when the babies have their first shed I'm going to send mom's & babies shed's to have them DNA'd

I was only kidding around.

If you can prove she got preggers on here own - WOW!!

I have to admit I am a bit sceptical, but you seem sure of your facts.

Please follow through and keep us posted.

I posted an earlier post on the 28th "Sperm Retention" check it out. I think it's still on page 2.

Thanks!

I still say it cannot happen in pythons........

.........hundreds of snakes are actually bred and eggs are duds or non-coming.......if they can make their own fertile eggs without a male.....you'd think they'd have the decency to not waste sperm that is already present......

.......right?

It has been documented in Burmeses at the Artis Zoo, Amsterdam (I mentioned it earlier in the thread). http://www.nature.com/hdy/journal/v90/n2/full/6800210a.html Beats me if it's possible in ball pythons.

I know what is said and about the burms and all......
I still think it is possible that someone bred her and didn't tell anyone late at night.......

or something like that......

.....it didn't happen in a humans that one time either.......

........but you all believe what you want to......

..........I know...that the only true rule in the world is that the rules will be broken......

I finally got a hold of the person who gave me the snake & he did tell me that the person that owned her DID NOT have her with any males & that was about 7 years ago...7YEARS!!! Unless she is a hermaphrodite then I hate to tell ya bud, the world does evolve & stranger things have happened. Open your mind.
