boy or girl?

honeybee Aug 18, 2003 06:53 AM

I've had my RES for about 1.5 years and he/she is about 5.5 inches long. But I can't tell if my little buddy is a boy or girl. Not that it matters much, I guess. I'm just curious. I've read that the males front claws are longer than a females and that the male's tail is longer and thicker...but compared to what?! I only have one turtle. I have nothing to compare to.

Here is a pic of my male's nails.

BTW, your guy is way to big for his age, I would guess he is way overfed.

Holy Cow! Well, I guess I have a little girl then. Her nails aren't nearly that long. I got her Feb. 2002 and she was about 3" long. I'm just guessing she's 2 years old. You really think I'm feeding her too much? She isn't fat (or bulgy). Thanks so much for the pics.

She could be older than you think, but usually they reach 5 inches at about 5 years old. That is a pretty fast growth rate, but as long as there is no shell deformities and she can still retract completely into her shell she is probably fine.

Oh, she can retract just fine. Usually does that when she gets a "bath" (I rinse her shell in clean water and rub the top of it to keep it clean and free of debris). I do feed her every day...a bit of ReptoMin and some other treat later in the day (might be veggie, occasional fruit, cricket, worm, tiny fish, dried shrimp)

Normally an adult slider is fed every other day with reptomin and greens or veggies daily.
