normal bloodwork range for beardie?

lele Jul 03, 2007 06:05 PM

I just posted this to the beardie forum but figured I'd post here, too:

Can anyone direct me to a site that has the "normal" ranges for a full blood panel for herps (BD's in particular). Darwin just had extensive work done and my vet does not see anything that is outstanding (we are at a loss as to what is wrong with him). I trust him completely, but picked up a copy of the bw today and would like to have something to compare it to for my own knowledge.

thanks,
lele

Hmm, there isn't really a perfect answer for you as it is very much an individual thing, but for general ranges, let me know what tests were done (I'm presuming cell counts and chemestry--there is lots of possible chem tests though)

The values I am using are from the second edition Mader and are specific to bearded dragon.

PCV 17-28%
RBC 0.8-1.8 x 10^6/ml
WBC 5.9-14.3 x 10^3/ml
Lymphocytes 54-76 x 10^3/ml
Azurophils 0-3 x 10^3/ml

AP 15-447 IU/L
ALT 4-20 IU/L
AST 0-92 IU/L
Bilirubin 0-3.7 mg/dl
BUN 3-4 mg/dl
Ca 8-13 mg/dl
Chloride 107-163 mEq/L
Chol 160-900 mg/dl
Creatine 59-7000 IU/L
Creatinine 0-0.6mg/dl
Glucose 211-261mg/dl
LDH 35-628 IU/L
Phosphorus 2.7-15.1 mg/dl
Total Protein 2.0-2.7 g/dl
Albumin 1.3-4.6 g/dL
Globulin 1-4.4 g/dL
Na 137-186 mEq/L
Triglycerides 93-459 mg/dl
Uric acid 2.9-10.0mg/dl

You'll see that some of the ranges are quite large, thus the importance of the vet's interpretation. In this case you are trusting your vet for knowing reptiles enough to do this well, or to have access to resources and collegues that can do this for them.

If you'd like, sharing a little more on the case will allow me to offer an opinion.

Hi Ian,

we were cross posting I just did a bit of explanation in reply to B22.

I will print out and look over your ranges. I do trust me vet, he is a herp vet who I bring both my panther chameleon, Cyrus, and Darwin to for care. I used to go to an ARAV certified, but he was much farther away and frankly I like my uncertified guy better!!

Are you a vet or expereinced keeper/breeder? I have to run out so if I do not reply right away I will get back to it later, also want to check results. If you want to drop me an email I can scan in the results for you to check.

Thanks!!
