Herd a cool story today ...

jobi Jul 04, 2007 03:31 PM

about a man keeping a monitor near my place, I don’t know if it’s such a cool thing or not? You be the judge personally it don’t bother me in anyway.
This man is about 60old, I hear he’s been keeping a monitor for some years now, he build a series of bird feeders in his yard, supposedly he attracts plenty of birds of many species, he and his wife are passionate birders, he feed his monitor with birds he shoots with a bb gun.

Now many will react to this, I can’t blame anyone if this is the case.

Nevertheless I am curious about this fellow and will arrange to meet with him and learn more about him the birds and monitor.

Theirs a city employee who picks DOR animals I use to feed my captives, he’s the one who told me this story.
Would you hunt birds to feed your monitor?
That’s one option I never tot about, wonder if he will rather take my rats given the option?

As long as they can digest the metal BB's, I don't see a problem, with feeding wild birds.

It depends whether they are native birds or feral(evasive) birds like english sparrows, or grackles, or other such birds in your area.

I say go for the ferals and heck no for the native birds. Cheers

well considering its against state and federal laws to kill native song birds and many others it could get expensive if he gets caught shooting those birds! Of course if its english sparrows shoot away! Big Jim

You shot birds with a bb gun!
What kind-how many?
Man if ever I was to try this all my neighbours would be out of windows, iv never shot a rifle in my life not even a sling shot, I did shot a seagull at Mc-Donald with a ¼ bonder once, the dang thing was attacking my doter fries. But after he got his senses back it flew away with my burger.

But seriously dough, I could never shot wild birds not even those waking me up every morning.

It's not monitors, but on the Bob Clark forums one of them members hunts for the majority of his burmese python's meals. He has fed his burm raccoons, opossums, skunks, rats, birds, bobcats, and some other stuff. You name it, he has pretty much shot it and fed it to his snake.

I have been feeding my Retic Squrilles that a guy at work shoots out of his garden along with rabbits. I go dove hunting in the fall and that feeds my retic for a good couple of months. 5-6 birds every week keeps it pretty happy its still small at only 10ft and 1 year old Ill probally have to up that count to 10 birds during the season I better practice a little more. As my Nile reaches adulthood I plan on feeding some wild game to it as well. I do however freeze all of my wild game b4 feeding to hopefully kill and parasites that might be present. I done see anything wrong with saving a little money when ya can and a good bb gun can be loads of fun.

Freezing? Hahaha
That’s how parasitetologist preserve live specimens, but the good news is you don’t need to worry about parasites.
