Metallic bairdi photos - 1 year olds

zhivago97 Jul 04, 2007 03:44 PM

My two 'metallic' bairdi from vivid. Female has much more saturated color with yellowish neck and lots of orange/red on head and body with a very dark grey tail.

The male is more pale/pastel with a light blue, steel colored tail.

I like the male color better...in person it's very beautiful...unfortunately he is very timid. In person he almost looks pink.

Actually, the "full size" photos are very colorful. The scaled back size here is only OK. i'd be happy to email if you want to see the color close up.

It's interesting how quickly they color up. I notice color changes every couple weeks. Fast growers, too. Each over 3 feet now.

Enjoy!

Are you absolutely certain that the sexes are correct?
Reason I ask: My pair of Gebhard bairds consistently produce males that are more orange than females.
I was toying with the idea that males are always more colorful, just based on my results.

Let me know what you find when you sex them.
Just wondering.
I'm hoping I'm wrong, actually.

With bairdi, is there a way to sex by looking at the tail?

Do these guys really look metallic in real life? I realize they are probably no here near as metallic-looking as fish with shiny/iridescent guanine crystals in their skin, but how do they look in real life? Are they just gray? I've seriously been considering getting some Metallic Bairdi recently, so I wanted to hear what people think of them.

they don't exactly sparkle like a new car, but some do look like a stick of graphite or others like burnished steel.
They are definitely pretty, each in its own way. There are very pale ones and very dark ones and everything in between.
The trouble with them is you never know what you're gonna get. All the babies come out looking almost identical, but age differently. The lines run true for the most part, but there is a lot of variation in pigmentation. I wish it were easier to buy adults, but even then, they keep changing.
You really don't know what the outcome will be until 2 years of age. My male is still getting more orange with black stripes, and he's at six years, my female has been the same for 3 years.
