How easy are them to die?

Flavia Guimaraes Aug 18, 2003 09:18 AM

My name is Flavia and, well, i have a lot of reptiles at home (Iguanas,Monkey Tail, Crocodile Skink, Leopard Gecko, Star tortoises and Blue Tongue Skinks). All of them are doing great now.I wanted to add an Uromastyx to my collection. I saw one to be sold at the local petshop. He is just like the uro on the photo above, black with yellow spots on his back.He is around 10 inches and very good looking with a fat tail and body.He had just arrived at the petshop and the owner doesnt know what to do with him , how to feed him, etc...and the poor baby looked very tired, he had his eyes closed and didnt want to move very much.I could handle him without problems!Perhaps its because he has being kept in a wrong temperature ( around 75F) perhaps its because he is very stressed i dont know. I read that uros are very easy to die. Although he looks great do you think he will probably die if i buy him?

If he has only been at this pet store a very short time, and he is fat and otherwise looking healthy, then I would say he has a pretty high chance of being ok. The temps definately can make him very sleepy like and not move much. They need 100 degrees before they will even come out of their hide areas.

If you do want him, the sooner the better. If he is left in these conditions he will ultimately die.

Wondering why on earth this pet store even got him when he has no idea what to do with him??? stupid stupid stupid.....

Are them easy to tame? The guy in the photo above, the Site photo, what kind of uro is it? Beni? Mali? I dont know anything about uros!Rs

The one in the photo above I believe is a Mali of which I have 3 of. I first just had 2, then rescued 2 that were in a pet store being terribly neglected. so much, that I sued them along with the Humane society in my area and we won! The one was so starved that he had skin hanging off his bones. The other actually was bloody on her underside and the scales were rotting off her feet. fortunately I got them when I did and nursed them back to health. But unfortunately, the second one I spoke of died earlier this year from unknown causes.

As far as tame..they are very very tame creatures. But still have very distinct personalities. Some of the uro's dont get too awful big with the exception of egyptians. But they are kept similar to the iguanas (as I've seen you on those boards) with veggie diets, vitamin suppliments, uvb source as well as basking area.

If you'd like to become more familiar with the different types of uro's and their care, check out the deerfernfarms.com page. They are an excellent resource for info.

good luck!
