No Male Pregger Ball

zefdin Jul 05, 2007 06:28 AM

With regard to the female Ball Python from awhile ago that has become pregnant seemingly on her own, with no male snake present.

This is crazy, but maybe the male has been there all along...

Is it possible the snake is a hermaphrodite?

Im laughing while I am typing, but maybe it is possible it was born with both sets of organs?

This would explain alot.

Does sound kinda weird, but I believe it can happen. Can you pop it to be sure?

Ahem, let me be a little more specific. I believe their can be hermaphrodites in the snake world. Not sure about one impregnating itself though.

I believe that no long ago he posted about a snake that he has that was a hermaphrodite, If I am not mistaken he took it to a vet and had a ultrasound done. His did not lay eggs but I wonder if that is possible.

Well that would be fine except hermaphrodites can’t self impregnate , I know I have a 3year old Hermaphrodite Ball Python and it has been verified by the Vet . But females have stored ether Sperm or fertile Follicles for a extended period of time . There have been females that were bred and not produce eggs that session and not bred the next and lay fertile eggs . David of DS Reptile Rescue

I researched this topic, and it appears that hermaphridites can in fact inseminate themselves? I dont know, not all vets no what they are talking about...and not many people like to say I dont know. Especially when you are paying them to know??

Or, maybe your vet was correct, I dont know. I do think a snake being a hermaphridite and knocking itself up is alot more realistic than the immaculate conception talk that was going around.

Let me clarify what I mint they can’t successfully reproduce, I called my Vet and he said they can self inseminate if both sets of sex organs are complete witch is very rare but can’t reproduce a baby that will live . That would be the ultimate in inbreeding LOL. But it would cut down on dating and foreplay LOL. Thanks David of DS Reptile Rescue

I read the link you posted and it said they can when it is the norm. for that speci. But not when it is not the norm. at least that’s what I got from it . David
