Best Orchids For use in a Dartfrog Enclosure?

andersonii85 Aug 18, 2003 09:22 AM

I have used many species some with luck and with most others not so much luck. I want to use miniature- smaller species, but can't find too many that do really well. I have used Ludisia discolor (award winning ones at that) and they do well, but I have tried some spp. of Masdevallia, Maxillaria, Paphilopedilum, Dracula, Malaxis, and Macode- all did well initially but then soon after died. Does anyone have any suggestions for some really hearty spp. that do well with relatively poor ventilation?

Thanks any input would be great!

I have some Dracula's in my cobalt viv that have been doing very well for the past 8-9 months. I keep it wedged in a knot-hole in a tree branch and it seems to have anchored itself nicely. I don't keep a fan on them, and I use an all-glass top, so not much ventilation. The only real ventilation they get is during feeding time and when I mist. How long did it take before yours started to go under?

Randy,
It took about 7 months before it got a fungal disease... I use plexiglass tops with holes drilled into them for ventilation, but I guess it was not enough.

Justin,
I have also had my ludisia discolor for about 8 months and have had to take cutting off of it because it grows so good.I went to Andy's orchids and used their power search and found some.I was going to order them from them but found a place where they were cheaper. The 2 species I just bought are Haraella retrocalla and angraecum distichum. The a.distichum aren't close to blooming but the other one is.I will keep you posted.I ordered mine from Oak Hill Gardens in Illinois.

Mark,
Thanks for the info, I will check this company out. I'm just getting sick of buying expensive plants and having them die on me. Please, keep me posted and post some pictures if you can of those two spps.

Thanks

Justin
