Weird Shed...have you ever seen this???

intoanewt Jul 05, 2007 03:39 PM

Not sure what to make of this, never seen anything like it before. Was kinda rattled by it so i didnt think to take pics!

I have a 5 year old very healthy rosy boa. Only problem she's ever had with a shed was many years ago there was a retained eye cap...which was easily fixed.

I knew she was getting ready to shed...and apparently did so while I was out last night. This morning when I checked on her...I found the weirdest thing. Not even sure how to describe this. She managed to shed: as in her skin was totally loose everywhere...but she was still in the skin. She somehow got her head up into the tail end of the skin. She looked like a big donut caught in the shed skin, head overlapping the tail inside this giant circle. she had wrapped around in a circle and was so stuck in this skin donut she couldnt move.

I ripped apart the skin that was covering her head/tail and she then managed to crawl out of the skin. Other than the big tear I made in the skin, it is a complete shed, except for one retained eyecap again.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this? I cant even begin to imagine how she did this! Was this just a fluke occurance or could there be something wrong with her or her tank?

I've read a similar post before, seems the snake while crawiling out of it's old shed skin has inadvertently entered the mouth opening of the shed. Chalk it up to not the brightest craypon in the box.

Also, IMO much more likely in captivity than in the wild where they are not forced to recross their path over and over again.

Thanks for the reply Dave. Would rather think that my snake is "not the brightest crayon" rather than to wonder if theres something Im doing wrong!

I guess Im real lucky that she didnt decide to pull this stunt in her water dish that I left in the tank for her to soak in while preparing to shed!
