Reptile Movie Reviews

Out of boredome I've decided the world needs a site reviewing all the herp-related movies out there. It might give you some suggestions for what to watch, it might also save you from watching something totally horrid. So far I've done around 21 herp movies and 5 dragon movies.

Enjoy

Nice job. May I recommend the 1973 flick "SSSSnake," which is on VHS but unfortunately not DVD. Strother Martin turns Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica into a king cobra, because he is convinced that human beings cannot survive much longer but snakes can. The good doctor is also innoculating himself with venom so that he can improve his odds in facing off against the king, who is milked regularly in a public show to keep the lab going.

It sounds goofy, and in parts it is, but as a kid I loved this movie because it didn't have redtail boas playing puff adders or even black racers playing black mambas. Lots of real venomous footage.

Watch for Komodo VS Cobra, ridiculous movie but fun-the not-so-very-special effects remind me of a dinosaur movie from the 70's.
Also, one called Stanley is supposed to de fairly good but haven't seen it.
Another one in the realm of ridiculous but fun is Spasms-a hunter was bitten years ago by what looks like a venomous retic, and now has a telepathic link to the snake-when it kills he sees the attack through the snake's point of view(for whatever reason the idiot has it captured and imported to the US with predictable results.)
It's fun to watch these movies sometimes if you know to expect a turd-but in the case of Python 2 I was still disappointed.

unfortunately neither Spasms nor Stanley is yet available on DVD. I await the day.

Stanley is difficult to find even on VHS but well worth searching for. I watch it several times a year a laugh every time.

I saw one years ago called "Cult of the Cobra" but I'm not sure if it's on DVD...

that is a b/w 50's movie not yet out on DVD. I do hope it comes out some day, probably the earliest "herp" movie I can remember.

It may not be a snake, but you have to see "Lair of the White Worm". Directed by Ken Russel, based on Bram Stoker's last novel, Lair features a huge white snake-like creature. Though called a worm in the title, the creature is definitely a vertebrate (it has a skull) and looks a lot like an enormous albino caecilian. Caecilians are a subfamily of amphibians, sort of like legless salamanders, although they are not salamanders.

This a campy, scary, and entertaining movie, done with low-budget but belivable effects, with a good script, a real plot, and great actors. In particular, Amanda Donohoe is fabulous as the sexy and sinister Lady Sylvia Marsh - who has a thing for the big white herptile.

I give this flick 7.9 out of 10 - it gets an extra 0.5 bonus for Amanda's semi-nude scenes.

It's readily available on DVD. So, Enjoy!
