Appartment complex's & Snakes . . .

BRB_Russ Jul 06, 2007 10:06 AM

yea so NO FREAKING APARTMENT COMPLEXES LET YOU HAVE SNAKES!!!!!

I have to move out because my roomate cant live there anymore, so i need a new apartment, every place i call says "no birds rabbits ferrits or snakes" Because aparantly all snakes are "exotic" even . . the FLORIDA kingsnake, or EVERGLADES rat snake which are technically native snakes. Gah why can i keep a fish in an aquarium but not a snake?!?!?!

I have 5 snakes now and i need to find a place if i cant i have to get rid of them . . .

I am totally stressing, i have a little over a month to find a place to live . . . .

Sorry for the rant.

Any now a pic

I know how that is. I have to move now, because of my reptiles. Most complexes that I looked at were very hesitant about the snakes. However, I have had better luck with family owned businesses and flats, instead of big apt complexes. Maybe try that route.

Yea but arround here any of the family owned ones etc tend to be not as nice ya know? the big corperate apt complex's are nice and clean and are reliable etc.

Russ,

Ethan (WolfenWarrior) and I have been having this same issue lately. We are moving to a new place, and have been having a hard time finding a manager that will allow snakes. It seems apartment complexes are a lost cause, but have been having more luck with managers who are renting houses, or flats. I know you said that those are crummy in your area, but are they really all crummy?

Around here, if you look hard enough, you can find some pretty decent flats. We just found one the other day that is actually pretty nice, and they allow snakes!

Try looking up places on your local Craigslist page (www.craigslist.org). I've found better luck finding places on there then on an internet search, or magazine ad.

Good luck!

Ouch, good luck with your search. 20 years ago when my wife and I had our first (and only) apartment, we got very lucky. The manager said it was OK to have snakes, just keep them inside and out of site from the other tenents. We even had an outside closet I raised a few rodents in.

IMO, the best plan is full disclosure, find a place that will allow you to keep your snakes INSIDE and out of sight. If you sneak them in, you could be setting yourself up for eviction. And that could haunt you forever.

the only problem with that plan is i have to find a place that will allow them in the first place! I tell them none of them are big and that they are all kept in cages/tanks etc but they dont care.

I think the only reason i can have them where i am is because the manager doesnt care, although i have a feeling it is against the rules . .

Exactly, you have to find that manager who is willing to bend or ignore the rules a bit for a harmless snake or two. Have you thought of renting a house, even going in on it with a few buddies?

well . . i have looked into private owners renting houses or condos, but i live with my girlfriend, so i would rather not have a roomate, let alone a bunch of them. . She is a clean freak so when living with a buncha guys she goes insane because she cleans everything and well . . "we" being us guys, dont do [bleep] and then drama comes and yada yada. . .

But yea i am looking into 1-2 bedroom houses condos now, but that doesnt even garontee that the owner wont be terrified of snakes . . .

when i had my first problem like that i actuallt told him you know none of them git past 6' and over 6lbs your dog can take a bigger dump than that lol he had a big doggy but iw as like there all tame in x mount years never had one get out or bite any1 and i will even sign a contract stating if one gets out i am 100% reliable for cost of hiring some1 to find the snake any damage chared etc and if one gets out i am liable to be evicted no questions asked. thats what did when he heard me say all that and sig the paper he was all for it even came over to see the snakes some times when in the appt doing work. his big thing was that he didnt want one getting loose and scaring other tendants etc. i wish you the best on your search just next time i dont know how it works there but here the apt manager is just the guy doing work around the place to lower his rent just a FYI talk to the land-lord aka the owner of the building he is the big man you need to talk to cause if manager says yes and land-lord finds out and dont like it your till [bleep]ed where you thought you had a in

Russ,
..Talk to other reptile owners there in Melbourne and see if they know someone who can help. There are loads of snake keepers there in the Melbourne area. Most renatls are not snake friendly but there are exceptions and the people who have been around there awhile should know at least a few of them.

Here in OKLA. I haven't had problems. I have always told them up front that I keep reptiles (don't say snakes) and they have always told me that terrarium pets are OK and have even written it into the lease without a pet deposit!

However, as long as I am living in apartments I am kind of hesitant to add to my collection just in case there is a change of management mid lease term.

Best of luck to you
