MAIDEN -- The alligator captured by two Maiden Rescue Squad workers in a pond off Fairview Drive Wednesday afternoon will be put to sleep.
Three boys spotted the 31-inch alligator when they were fishing at about 2 p.m. Wednesday.
The alligator went home with Maiden Rescue member Eric Kanipe Wednesday night.
“You could tell it was someone’s pet and was hand-fed, because it would come up to people looking for food,” Kanipe said.
A North Carolina Wildlife Commission Officer came to Kanipe’s home and picked up the reptile at about 1 p.m. Thursday. Kanipe asked if the alligator could be taken to a zoo.
The wildlife officer said because the animal was hand-fed, it would have to be put down.
