Calcinosis cutis

artgeckko Jul 06, 2007 05:17 PM

Hello-
I finally received word on the nature of the biopsies that were taken from my Egyptian Uro Grover.
My vet called to give me the info that the skin problem is Calcinosis cutis , or calcification of the skin..from Expedia...
If anybody has any more info regarding this ailment please forward me a link.?
The Vet stated that it is improper environment that may be causing this condition.
So know, I got to brainstorm to what to keep him in.
I fit wasn't for the nature of his poop I would just let him walk around the room.
I've got some ideas on what to build, but it will take some time.
Meanwhile, the betadine cleaning and silvadine cream is in Grover's immediate future.
Outside of the diminishing blisters, he seems to be healthy as ever..

I checked the index of reptile medicine/surgery-(mader):don't see it-i will cross reference but:
I saw elsewhere how it can be secondary to trauma(burns maybe) and i bet it has something to do with D3 levels as well(too much/too little).
p.s. 50 I.U. per kg body weight is supposedly the D3 requirement for adult uros/100 i.u. per kg for juvi's(wilms)that equals a very light dusting less often for adults of minerall-I(big scientific discovery)
could be like a "sunburn" from intense radiation(too close to bulb) started it.
I have seen pics of Grover and wondered about this already.
I'll check more plus the wife is studying veterenarian type stuff.

Thanks.
I wondering why this has become a problem only in the last few years.
He has been in the same enclosure for a few years now.
I do not suplement very often at all.
I try to use the diet and access to sunlight as my supplement.
Also, Grovers bloodwork was "ideal", so the vet believes that it is caused by thermal radiation ...essentialy burns...That bums me out i try to be very careful.
That said, I have reduced the basking spot temps, since the ambient temps have been high recently that is not a concern.
What kind of UV meter do you use?
Need to get one I suppose to be more accurate on the UVB/wattage/heat ratios.
thanks for the help.

I use solarmeter 6.2 from solartech.
It may not be so much the surface temps as the close distance exposes him to more intense radiation from the bulb. In other words, a low wattage bulb at too close a distance will produce more intense radiation than a higher wattage bulb that is positioned further away, even if the bulbs produce the same surface temp. But I don't know your temps.

mega-ray has a bulb that reaches 3 ft-not very wide a spread, though. He won't sell it to hobbyists unless they have a meter. It comes in a 60 watt version, group 2-3 together for an egyptian adult. Best option for now. Mine are still small but they stand up on their hind legs and jump at the bulbs. I call Kooz aka Carmelo, and once, I am so lucky, i heard a noise and turned around to find Wadi dangling from a fixture like Darryl Dawkins or something, I had to swat her off(and raise the bulb.) If I wasn't right there, she would have been burned. The noise was her toe nails hitting the bulb. My egyptians think they are in the NBA,man, I'm serious. What will I do when they get BIG?I hope there are some technological advances by then.

I know what you mean.
Mine the biggest problem is that they have learned to get out of their cages(push 3 feet of 1/4 glass) so they can get out and have stare offs with fellow cagemates.
This started this most current breeding season.
Well I have been contemplating new caging for grover anyway so there you have it.

Thanks for the UV meter suggestion. I have gone through all the bulbs except for the one you suggested from big apple herp.

I have reduced the wattage of his basking temps , which were at the high point anyway 130F for a 15 F reduction.
We will see how that goes and if there is a reduction in his appetite(which has been great so far, even with the added stress of betadine and silvadine applications)
Thanks for the help.

What a bummer, it's a damn shame this has surfaced again, I know what ya went through a couple years ago. I sure hope this recent Vet finding will be the answer and he will be okay!

It still sounds so weird. Why all those years you never had this problem. I hope you keep us informed. I had a very sad time last month, never said anything , I really did not want to talk about it, still don't , so I will just say I lost my girl Cleo, just happened, I don't know how old she was when I got her as a burned rescue, I know she was an adult, I had her for about 7 years, and she was a sweetie. I will always remember her. But think I will take a break and just have my male saharan Crispy for a while. :0(

Hope and pray Grover will beat this thing and do well for you buddy! Take care, Congratulations on all those kids how wonderful!

That is dreadful news. I am so sorry. That literally took my breath away.
I completely understand not wanting to talk about it.
That is very upsetting, my neighbor gives me grief all the time, he does not understand the reptile thing at all.
"It's not a dog, or a cat"
Thing is, I explain, it is a pet.
Fish, Frog, Snake, hamster, Etc..., It doesn't matter.
You love them, regardless of what you get in return.
My deepest condolences.
