Are Hogs just plain dumb?

happycamper Jul 06, 2007 05:24 PM

We all know how cute their faces are and how stylish their patterns are, but looks at the expense of brains? I think so. How many of you have seen your western hogs bite themselves while looking for that dead mouse dropped in the cage? It happened for the third time to me yesterday. My adult female held on for a full 5 seconds or so after she "caught" her tail. (Isn't there some mythological snake which eats it's tail)? Meanwhile my babies try to eat the plastic sides of their enclosures locating that scented pinkie right in front of their nose! Just how do these survive in the wild? Beats me. But I still love 'em!

How do they survive? Simple-they use that snout of theirs, plus that incredible sense of smell, to find and dig up totally helpless and nearly immobile prey-aestivating/sleeping amphibians and lizards, as well as helpless nestling rodents! It's not exactly a lifestyle requiring a genius I.Q. ....

According to the Prose Edda(Norse mythology), Odin took Loki's three children, Fenrisúlfr, Hel and Jörmungandr(the serpent). He tossed Jörmungandr into the great ocean that encircles Midgard. The serpent grew so big that he was able to surround the Earth and grasp his own tail, and as a result he earned the alternate name of the Midgard Serpent or World Serpent.
There are a couple of cool stories that involve Jörmungandr
Just do a search for the name and you'll find them
