Did I Kill 'Em?

ColorfulCritters Jul 07, 2007 11:31 AM

Dead, the sick turtle I nudged along with betadine, iodine, and hot sun. Today found 'em stiff as a board, and wonder this: Could iodine have poisoned it?

Soon after taking care of it, its left limb puffed up, then a redline formed, then death. I've heard of sepsis before, so I wonder if I caused it.

Nonetheless, this was one sick puppy. Maybe it was gangrene. It smelled horribly rancid, and I wonder if the infection was internal.

HELLO
SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS.
I WOULD ONLY USE EITHER IODINE OR BETADINE.
I TREAT THE INFECTED AREA ,LET THE SOLUTION DRY ,THEN RETURN THE ANIMAL TO A HOSPITAL TANK.
YOU DID YOUR BEST
SOME LIVE AND SOME DON'T
IT IS A PART OF REPTILES
BY LEARNING AND ASKING QUESTIONS HOPEFULLY WE DON'T REPEAT THE SAME MISTAKES.

Yes, thanks for the note. You know, it's kind of like you'feel' for these animals, see one sick, have to always DIY unless you want to spend a fortune at vets; wish you were a vet yourself, get emotionally involved, feel a ton of guilt afterward. Blow it because not many laymen know what to do, landlord complaining the turtle "stinks," couple of stray dogs gotta keep on the roof besides, six turtles to take care of to boot, cost you $500.00 bucks just to fly them to your destination because you didn't want to commit "pet dumping"; see a sick turtle on the river bank, old, decaying sort of, grab it and think, "I'm here, why not."

Well, just rambling. I think I did a few things wrong, but I'm overseas. The turtle may've just died of old age too. I wonder, however, how it caught such a virulent fungus.

Maybe the turtle isn't from these parts. I go swimming in the same river I found it, however, so I think the water was clean. Thing is, I think it rains too much in these parts(Taiwan,) for it to bask enough, which could've contributed to its sickness.

Thanks again, though.

hello
it's hard to fix shell rot in high humidity situations
especially when it has already reached advanced stages
odds are it was very sick and that is why you were even able to catch it
you tried and that is what matters most is
people making an effort to help and conserve our wild life
best regards

Was it seen by a vet or was it diagnosed online? While many that are taken in might die, many more die, by online activity. The swollen leg could have been infection, heart trouble, et., but proper diagnosis might have rectify a cure.
