Deep Freeze- dead- 1000$ at risk?!?!

OKReptileRescue Jul 07, 2007 04:22 PM

ok- we just moved into a new house- we plugged the deep freeze in and after we'd moved all our stuff in (two days later)- I went to throw some other stuff in the freezer- bad news

it was still cool in there- like a refriderator- we changed plugs and now its working just fine- its an older home and we knew it had some 'plug' issues- and were changing them anyway but had to move our stuff first.

the question is- is all this stuff ok to re-freeze and feed later? theres about 1000 $ worth of rats, mice, pinks, quail, and others in there- but saving 1000$ of rodents isn't worth injuring the snakes if the food has started going bad.

the food on the bottom was still mostly frozen but the upper level of 'stuff' has thawed out and is cool to the touch....

thanks
Beth

It sounds like you're probably OK as far as safety goes. After being thatwed out a second time, you MAY find that some of the stuff on top may go soft and the abdomens may tend to rupture while the snakes are trying to eat them. Depending on how long they were thawed out, they may smell unappetizing enough that the snakes wont eat them. Wait a few days, thaw some out and see what you get...

I agree with Larry, it should all be fine. When frozen food is thawed to room temperature for a few hours is when you should be leery.

Take care!

the biggest factor is smell, if it smells bad chances are it is bad.

by bad i mean worse than usual
