frozen bulk vs breeding mice

reppinreps1134 Jul 08, 2007 01:40 AM

my real question is i know breeding mice is easy.. but how is the make it consistent to the feeding of you herps they way just buying frozen in bulk would do. i got two snakes, two savannahs, and a Argus monitor all eating pinkies, fuzzies, and hoppers.. so i probably will need about 3-4 females mice to deliver that order regularly. i dont really want to feed live, so i figured I would freeze them, but does sticking them in your everyday freezer work, or do i need something that will freeze them much faster? and if i give them fresh pre-killed moments before the meal, what is a good method to achieving this.

please as many answers as i can get

PS. will a male mouse eat the pinkies if left in the cage?

You can freeze pinkies as they die fairly quickly in the freezer and are naturally resistant to CO2. Anything with fur should NOT be frozen to kill it. CO2 is easiest, or cervical dislocation if you can do it properly.

CO2 is safe to pre-kill mice prior to feeding, as long as you remove them from the CO2 chamber to feed.

You can do it with dry ice if you have a convenient cheap source, or vinegar/baking soda, or the best way is using a refillable CO2 tank. I use 20 oz CO2 tanks sold for paintball. It's $1 per refill of CO2 and it lasts for months between refills.
