frozen bulk vs breeding mice?

reppinreps1134 Jul 08, 2007 01:46 AM

my real question is i know breeding mice is easy.. but how is the make it consistent to the feed of you herps they way buying frozen in bulk would do. i got two savs and a Argus all eating pinkies, fuzzies, and hopper .. so i probably will need about 3-4 females mice to deliver that order regularly. i dont really want to feed live, so i figured I would freeze them, but does sticking them in your everyday freezer work, or do i need something that will freeze them much faster? and if i give them fresh pre-killed moments before the meal, what is a good method to achieving this.

please as many answers as i can get

PS. will a male mouse eat the pinkies if left in the cage?

I find to kill a mouse quick, break its neck.

Put a butter knife blade end down against the base of its skull, then give the tail a swift jerk.

Seems like instantaneous death.

P.S.- I hate doing that, frozen food for the win...

Freeze them? Hahahahah now that's terrible. What are you going to do, open the door periodically and watch them huddling together to try in vain to keep warm?

The generally accepted 'humane' method of killing rodents is co2. With a paint ball canister and a cooler you can build your own rather cheaply.

Or...just swing them by the tail and smack their heads against the nearest hard object. Rats are a problem here since their tail skin may slide off leaving you with quite the nightmare scurrying around the room.

Personally I just let my monitors, crocs, etc do it. They are faster than most any method I have seen. Now my piranhas, I feed those ft, something about a mouse trying to swim around while shaking all over because a fish is buried up in their chest cavity that gives me the creeps.

Anyway, hahhahaha freeze them, that's funny as hell. Sicko.

If you are feeding three monitors you are gonna need way more mice than a small group. The monitors are small right now but are gonna grow and eat more. Mine can do in dozens of mice and so I generally feed small rats. So then you are working your way up to rats......
My general advice. If you don't want to or have room for a couple three groups of rodents then don't bother. You will hate the furries and not want to do anything. If you don't mind rodents and want something to do...raise rodents. And no, a male will not eat pups. You go moving mice around and you will slow down production with mice.
What will cause cannabalizing is if a female is stressed (you bugging them) not fed enough protein and fat, or is new to the whole thing. First litters in new hands are often eaten, give them a second chance.
Mice are cake to kill. Object firmly behind head, tug tail. Pinning them with the back of a pair scissors, screwdriver blade...sidewise something like that.

Just buy frozen, it's easier.
