You forgot to include price in your query, as I doubt somebody with little experience or knowledge of this particular species (as demonstrated by the questions asked in your post) would spend the several thousand dollars which these animals exchanges hands for here within the US or Canada (assuming that you are from North America). I believe they are even more expensive in Europe.
Having cared for an adult male V. varius in the past, I would say that this is not a recommended species for the beginner/novice varanid keeper, even if money was not an option. Their size, strength, feeding responses, and required cage space is not condusive to what most varanid keepers are willing to provide (or able to provide).
