To the largescale breeders...

Doug89 Jul 08, 2007 03:20 AM

How do you guys keep track of all your snakes and such?

Files, computer programs... etc?

I was just curious, i was bored tonight so i spent a good 4-6 hours or so writing a program to keep track of Everything you can think of with pet snakes. And it can be implemented on a large-scale, as many animals as you wish! But it's still a work in progress... i've fleshed out the menus and interface but i've still got to program a few functions that i havent' already done... okay too technical, ha

haha anyways... just wondering how everyone else still keeps track.

i keep track of whos doing what with wordpad, i just write down who did what, every day. would be hard with lots of snakes because you need names with that system.

ive always thought big breeders have a sheet on every cage with feeding and shed dates.

I see...

Yeah my program is gonna work like this i suppose...

There's gonna be an "Overview" page. It shows which animals need to be fed, how much feed you have left in stock, other important and immediate info.

Then you can look up the individual records of each snake by either Name or ID number or from a giant list of all the animals which you can choose from.

Each record can have pretty much anything you want on there. Name, species, age, parents, morph, etc.

Like i said, i just finished the 'skeleton' of the program, now i have to get down to the actual function programming.

Anyone else?

you must love programming to do all that work to record one snakes data, or are you going to get a patent and sell it?

it sounds great to me, you got my mind racing with ideas now.
you could make so you could access thier parents, children and mates through thier "page" maybe each snake could have a little profile similar to myspace, instead of a top friends list have a family tree.

like i said, you have my mind racing with pointless ideas.

Haha, thats good though, that's all a programmer is is a person with a mind racing with ideas!

No i wont patent it and sell it, although i probably could, i will just release it for anyone to use for free.

It's not a windows program, ha, i can do some WIN32 API but not enough to get this project done. It's nice though, working on it little by little, well a lot by alot, haha last night and the night before i put a good 5-6 hours in each night, it's getting there.

And yes, each snake has it's own "Profile" so to speak...

It includes, ID#, Name, Species Common Name, Scientific Name, Morph, age, DOB, weight, length, feed cycle (normally 7 days but it can be whatever you want it to be), last fed, next feed, sex, the names/species/id#'s/ whatever you want to put for its parents, temperment... i think that's it so far but i'm bound to be adding more!

I really like it, it's all my work in there too, no copying and pasting code from other people, you need a username and a password to login to the program, then it uses your password to encrypt all the data you save in there, with an algorithm i designed and implemented myself (128-bit block cipher with a 64-bit key), its overkill cause who's gonna want to look at your files cept you? But i threw it in there cause i had some other functions from that project that helped out tremendously...

It's coming along... i'll let y'all know when its done!

When i finally finish it ill put it online to download and hotlink it here.

I'm gonna get to work on it again now, ha. It's got this one bug i cant seem to get out. It will not delete files for some reason (if you for whatever reason needed to delete an animals file).

So i'd better get to work!

Doug,

There are already some commercially available programs to do this. Some are/were available as free downloads, but I don't remember the specific name of them.

I haven't ever used them however, as they are generally designed for a person who has only a handful of snakes and gives them all names and wants photos of them. They aren't very efficient for larger-scale operations, IMHO. I have about 20-30 snakes most of the time and found these programs too much work.

I currently just use Excel to make a spreadsheet data form for my whole collection. I have a separate worksheet for each month and each line represents one species and each column a day of the month. I have a series of codes to record information (PK = pink, RP = rat pink, SH = shed, etc.).
Every year I start a new file.

I print it off and record data in pencil on the print out then input it into the program at the end of the month. Here's a view of one of my older data sheets -

IMO more of a medium scale. I have 90 plus snakes (will go over 100 with babies coming tomorrow). I keep all breeding and birthing records in a spreadsheet. All feed/shed records go on individual cards at each cage.
