Snake-proofing my vivarium

Stealth_Raptor Jul 08, 2007 07:06 AM

I got an old 10 gallons Leader sitting around without any sort of lid for it. I will be recieving a Children's Python hatchling within a month or so. Almost everything is set up, except I need to find a lid for it and snake-proof it.

I have two animals that have no problem mauling it or eating it upon sight.

What is the best lid and how do I snake-proof it flawlessly?

I know little about children's pythons but would think to "snake proof" an aquarium you would only need a screen top and brackets. Most pet stores carry them. Another option would be to install an acrylic topper. This would allow you to lay the tank on its side, essentially making the top the front. I am emailing you more info about these. If I posted the link here, the mods may remove it, because I would be essentially directing you to a seller.

Thanks for the link in the e-mail. I will take a look at it later. I am just making sure what options they are since I have read that aquariums are difficult to escape-proof, especially for snakes and small frogs.

The metal frame screen or mesh tops that they sell work pretty well. Pet stores near you should have the 10 gallon size easily.

There are also metal clips that were mentioned - these go on either side of the tank, and clip the metal mesh top to the underside of the plastic molded edge of the top of the tank. Especially for a small snake, this should be very secure.
