Pairing question

MMG Jul 08, 2007 11:06 AM

Hi all;
I have a silly question I guess, if you were to pair a hypo adn a albino on the ong way to sunglows which would you choose as female. I am guessing the hypo, or does it not really matter. Thank you in advance.

if you were trying to produce sunglows as fast as possible, I would choose the albino as the female because albino is recessive. You would produce double het sunglow babies, you could take a male from the litter and breed it back to the mother the following year, if you fed it right. I wouldn't recommend it though, I would wait until the male is about 2 years old. That would also help the female regain her weight in a healthy amount of time without power feeding.

If you did it the opposite way and had the hypo as a female, you would never produce sunglows from her because she would not carry the albino gene. You would have to have another female that was either albino or het for albino.

Hope this helps.
Tony

You are telling me that breeding a male albino to a female salmon (or super salmon) will not produce DH Sunglows?

I thought that if one of the parents was homozygous for a trait (albino in this case) that trait is passed on to all of the children as het. Therefore making any hypos in the litter het for Albino and therefore DH Sunglows.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks.

No, what he said is, for the quickest and easiest way to get sunglows breed a hypo male to an albino female. Resulting in double het sunglows. Then raise one of the male double hets up, breed back to momma and you will end up having a sunglow litter.

What he was saying is no matter how much you try, you can't make a hypo female that doesn't carry the het albino gene produce albinos or sunglows.
