Egyptian Uromastyx

Mike D Jul 08, 2007 06:02 PM

Hello all,

I havent been active on the site for a while but i have always loved uromastyx ive had some in the past and at the moment i have a mali that i have had for about 4 years now. i love him to death.

Within the next few months i am going to be taking down my fishtank and i am looking at getting a single egyptian uro. the tank is a 75 gallon (48x18x20 i belive) anyways i am wondering how long this will last for an egyptian? i know it will not sustain it for life, but i have been reading up on them for about a week now and i cannot find a solid answer on how big they can actually get, ive read anywhere from 2-3.5 feet.

Ive also read that egyptians are some of the most calm of the uromastyx speices is this true? in all of the uros i have had malis and saharan they have all been calm and i just absolutley love them.

is anyone could please give me some insight on the egyptians it would be much apreciated. im mostly looking for some pictures of full grown one and possibly pictures of your setups.

Thanks for any and all help

Mike D

I don't know about calmness-egyptian vs. others.
Mine are about 1 year old and 1 is skittish and will grind her tail in your skin for trying to pick her up- and the other will JUMP in your hand and climb on your head. Neither is really "calm". I have an adult female mali that is very calm and "tame" until another uro is in her sights- then she attacks.
Temperament differs by individual I think. But that tank will be fine until they are a year old to a year and a half. Mine are in 4x2's I made- still plenty of room. I will "upgrade" in spring.
That female mali is 11.5-12" and is in a 6x2 because I love her. I think bigger is better for living space, but if you buy a baby that tank will be good at least one year- if they are like mine.
I am no Bob Villa- my cages are more like "pens"- but functional and the uros like them. Maximum size? That depends on a lot of things...It takes a long time to get to 3ft. no matter what- and 2feet is still VERY LARGE (egyptian are thick and strong)anyway. If you buy a CB ask about the parents, best way to estimate.I find the egyptians to be the most interesting. But mine are NOT calm. I saw one at a store that was maybe 20 inches long and he was NOT calm either.NOT at all.

since kooz is wild caught, this could be his daddy, but hey! there's a lot of big egyptians so don't point the finger, melvin.
