New baby RES (have an older one) and Housing problems / questions. NEED HELP.

Hi everyone. I came to you guys a while back when I got Bicho and you helped me a lot. Bicho is a happy turtle. My wife's crazy grandmother thought it would be cute to get a baby turle this weekend and give it to me as a gift. I was happy to accept it, but this thing is TINY. Its definately a RES so thats cool, but he is seriously the size of a quarter and a penny side by side.

I put him in the tank and I think Bicho tried to attack, so I got him his own little tank so he could grow and eat in peace before I integrate them. Right now I can't afford to get another big tank and filter so he is in a small round clear aquarium, about 1 foot in diameter, with about 2 inches of water. He swims around and climbs on the basking rock but he doesnt eat. I assume its because he has to get used to his environment; yad yada yada. I am feeding him the Reptomin baby turtle stuff.

I changed the water last night, and will do it every night if I have to, but I'm sure this isn't helping with the "getting used to" stuff since I am constantly sticking my hands in to change the water.

My bright idea was to drill holes in the bottom and sides of the tank, and suspend it inside the big tank so that water is constantly circulating. Do you think this is a good idea? Do you think the baby is gonna be freaked by the big guy swimming around him (even though he won't be able to get to him?)

The benefit is that they can share the basking light, the correctly temperatured water, and maybe even some guppies will swim in. The water will circulate and be clean, too.

The bad thing is that Bicho will lose half of the tank's water surface. He would only be able to climb onto the rock from one side, and will only be able to come up for air on one side.

The alternative is to keep it as is and clean the small tank every night.

PLEASE ADVISE.

Before you say it...
- The water level is now all the way up in the tank.
- I know I am going to have to get a bigger tank soon.

I don't think the baby turtle will do very well with a much bigger turtle swimming around him. I would set up a 10 gallon tank for the little guy, that is how my guys started out, with a cheap fish filter and basking light, and UVB tube. Probably about $100 setup.

Its much more a space issue than a money issue. I don't have anywhere to put another tank. I guess I'll just work with what I have. Thanks, all.

I like your idea. I wouold say give it a try! In a couple of months your little guy should be a decent size (1-2".
