water snake eating a fish...

EddieF Jul 09, 2007 11:34 AM

This is kind of cool. We were on vacation in Montana and in the rocks along the Clark Fork river we came across this snake with a fish in its mouth! I didn't recognize the snake, but it was nearby a much larger snake that we are confident was a northern water snake. Is this the same kind, maybe a juvenile?

I don't believe there are water snakes in Montana at all.

Really?? These things were both swimming in the water, then slipping under the rocks along the shore. Here is the larger brown one, I didn't get a photo of his head, he was twice the size of the fish eater...

Garter snakes spend a lot of time in and around water, since much of their diet can consist of frogs and fish. But they aren't really consider water snakes.

that is definitely a wandering garter....no water snakes in Montana. Garters are found mainly near water as a large part of their diet is fish and amphibians.

Thanks. Man, I'd love to see how they catch a fish, that must be quite a sight!

well, I live in Virginia, and I do a lot of wad-fishing in small rivers for small mouth...anyways, water snakes are EVERYWHERE here, and I've had some wonderful times watching them hunt in the water...I got to see an approx. 3 footer strike and catch minnows, completely underwater! The amazing thing was that it struck and caught its prey just as quickly as above water! They are so much fun to watch
