strange pattern on Baja cal king

Shlacon Aug 18, 2003 01:03 PM

I was at the pomona show on saturday and saw a baja king california king that was almost solid black. He has light triangled shage marking along its sides and a faint strip. I was wondering if this is typical. My brother bought a pair of them ( one typical banded female and the strange male) Just was wondering
Thanks alot
Jamie

That sounds like a Baja King. They are melanistic with faint remnants of light pattern. The striped used to be called "nitida" and the banded "conjuncta". They were later considered to be just a natural color morph of the California Kingsnake occuring only in Baja.

I saw that one too, I didnt like the baja kings too much. I got a pair of cal kings, one banded one aberrant, from the LLL booth at the show. I like more white, the nearly all black doesnt have much contrast.
