moldy eggs??

KingCobra Jul 10, 2007 01:16 AM

Hi, I am currently incubating two types of snake eggs in one incubator, and I have encountered a minor problem. All of the racer eggs smell of mold and some will have light mold around them. I carefully wipe the mold off, and I think they will be fine.

My question is: Why do none of the gopher snake eggs smell of or evan have any mold around them? the only difference in the eggs other than the size and shape is that the racer eggs have a fine grain-like texture to them. Could that be why they mold??

My experience has been that most of the time if you see mold on the egg it is dead. Eggs that do not have mold continue to develop and hatch correctly. I have never had a molded egg hatch. Eventually the egg will collapse and turn colors.
I also never through them out until I see them turn colors and shrivel.

Thank you for the info. it has been 3 weeks since the eggs were laid, and they all look healthy with no discoloration. I am sure they were fertile when laid because I could see the dark spot and vaining by using the candling method.

I will keep them so long as they don't indent and look healthy.

This pic of one of the racer eggs was taken yesterday:
